HOW DOES A TIDE CLOCK WORK
The major influence on our tides is the Moon, which takes 24 hours 50 minutes to circle the globe.
During that time the Moon will cause 2 tidal cycles, each 12 hours and 25 minutes apart.
A tide clock uses a special quartz 'movement' whereby the hand takes 12 hours 25 minutes to make one revolution of the dial, which is marked with High Tide at the top, and Low Tide at the bottom.
Between these the tide is shown as rising or falling, with hourly marks indicating the hours until the next high or low tide. Further reading can be found here.
Some places, eg Fremantle in Australia, have a tidal cycle which does not conform to the above.
